- How
to Heal Your Tattoo
- 1) Remove
bandage in 3 - 4 hours (it is ok to leave it on until morning). Then
wash your tattoo thoroughly with your hand or paper towel and warm
soapy water until you remove all the dryed blood, plasma and any
excess color. WHY: Leaving the bandage on for this amount of time
allows the tattoo to finish bleeding and oozing plasma. By washing
it away, you are decreasing your chances of scabbing heavily.
2) DO NOTHING to the tattoo
for a period of about 48 hours. Showering is fine, just
pat dry afterwards.
3) When the tattoo begins to feel tight and
itchy, you may use lotion several times a day to
relive the itch, but use sparingly. DO
NOT use
any ointments, oil or petroleum based products, as they delay the healing considerably.
Also having a "greasy" layer over your tattoo may
cause dirt and bacteria to stick to your tattoo possibly
causing an infection. WHY: Not
only does lotion prevent the tattoo from itching, but it also prevents the
tattoo from getting so dry that it cracks. Cracking can cause color loss.
Overusing lotion can create the same effect as using a petroleum-based product.
When a tattoo is not allowed to air out it will sometimes seep out color.
4) Avoid the sun (direct or tanning beds) for approximately
6-8 weeks. Also avoid spray tans or tanning lotions until your
scabbing is completely gone. After the 6 week period we recommend using
SUNBLOCK to prevent any deterioration
of color due to sun exposure. This will keep the tattoo as beautiful as the
day you got it.
5) Stay out of chlorine, lakes, ponds, hot tubs etc. as
long as there is a scab. If there is no scab, then avoid these
for a period of 1 to 2 weeks. WHY: chlorine
has a bleaching effect and all others are a hot bed of bacterial activity,
increasing your risk of infection considerably.
6) Do not pick at or let your friends touch your new tattoo. WHY: picking
will of course remove color, and who knows when your friend washed their hands
last.
7) Avoid tight restrictive clothing over the tattooed area
until it is fully healed. With tattoos on the feet, you'll need
to go barefoot as much as possible. When you cannot go barefoot, wear
cotton socks and tennis shoes for about a week. WHY: clothing
can have the same effects as picking at a tattoo.
8) Tattoos on legs and ankles should be elevated for the
first 48 hours whenever possible. This increases circulation
and promotes a quicker healing.
9) Do not shave over your new tattoo. WHY: It
can remove the skin cells that are healing (AKA scabbing).
10) Do not come into contact with community surfaces such as Gym equipment
for at least 48 hours. WHY: You are still susceptable to other peoples
germs and may spread your own.
